Addthis.com

Talking about the inner workings of a blog is about as interesting to the common reader as talking about a dual overhead cam structure for someone who merely drives a car (vs fixes or tinkers).  Thus, my notion about writing about addthis.com is a bit “inside baseball”…but I thought it worthy to bring to the audience’s attention.

For those of you who are technically “challenged” and I mean a type of person who couldnt discuss the nuances of CSS, AJAX or DHTML….this may or may not be of value.  But if you are like me….and are keenly interested in new media, like to play around with blog software, downloadable widgets etc..but dont necessarily understand how it all works (ie the innards)…check out addthis.com for a cool widget.

You can basically add a boat load of buttons with an “add this button” link.  Copy cut and paste some HTML modified for wordpress or the other blog platforms and “wala”.  Instant gratification. Now those curious souls who would otherwise read a blog and move on…they now can “digg it” or a host of other interactions with all the buttons:

Even I was able to paste the code into the widget function in wordpress and now I have a really cool set of buttons that all my friends talk about and use.

Point is….if social media, widgets, blogs, etc are going to continue to grow and have an even greater mass appeal, they need to be socially friendly.  Providing raw RSS code is about as useful as a two…never mind.  The average consumer / reader needs easy to use products that dont require an EE degree.

Keep it simple folks.  Facebook (as mentioned in another blog) is onto something…..with all the downloadable widgets that are rendered on the site with merely a click of a button.  Piece of carrot cake as the old saying goes……
